25th Feb 2009

Today we have been on a half day tour of Santiago and that was good. We started with St Luchia Hill. Until 1851 this was just a rock then along came a "Vicuani McKenna" and he decided to change everything thus starting the site as we see it today.
A canon is fired from the top of this rock at noon every day.
Then onto governmentHouse where they were in the proccess of changing the guard.
After a walk through the city centre it was onto San Cristobal Hill; world famous for the big white statue of the Imaculate Conception on the top. This trip was a bit dissappointing due to the smog. You cannot se any distance on a hot day as you will see from the pictures.
Origionally there was a river at both sides of the city as you can see on the brass plaq1ues. Along came a guy called Bernardo O'Higgins and he decided that both rivers should be joined. Today there is a boulevard along the site of one of these rivers and this is called o'Higgins boulevard.
The other quirky thing about Santiago is the number of stray dogs on the streets, dozens of them and they are not badly off. A bit mangy looking but not starving by any means.
We are off to a dinner show tonight;BALLIHIGH, will let you know later how that goes.
Early starrt tomorrow as we are being picked up at 07.00 A.M. for our drive accross the ANDES to Argentia. More then. Kay & Ed
